Diversity and equality in the workplace is the concept that all human beings are free to develop their abilities and make choices without limitations due to their gender. Gender equality also means the fair treatment of everyone - not based on gender. Equal opportunities for women and men is the absence of barriers to economical, political and social participation in the workplace. It’s understood, however, that men and women of different ages, backgrounds and areas of specialization will require access to more or different training and development to fully reach their potential.

Diversity in the workplace involves not only race, gender and religion, but also encompasses a wide variety of other differences. These include work experience, parental status, educational background, geographic location and more. Diversity in the workplace involves observing legal and workplace policy requirements. It also means actively promoting community awareness. Workplace diversity can provide many benefits such as improved morale, greater teamwork and an overall atmosphere of mutual respect. From the University of California San Francisco’s Principals of Community:
“We recognize, value, and affirm that social diversity contributes richness to the University community and enhances the quality of campus life for individuals and groups. We take pride in our various achievements and we celebrate our differences.”
